Exhibit 44 by Galen Hunter

This Beetle Lived at the Salt Lake

On April 7, 1894 the American entomologist Henry C. Fall (Fig. 1) collected several species of beetles from the salt lake at Redondo. Henry C. Fall collected many beetles throughout Southern California and he donated his vast beetle collection to Harvard. One of the beetles he collected at the salt lake is a Tropisternus salsamentus which is a species of Coleoptera [beetles] in the family Hydrophilidae. This beetle is in the Entomology Collection of the Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ) at Harvard University. The MCZ cataloged and photographed this beetle (Fig. 2-6) and these photographs are available on the Encyclopedia of Life.

Henry C. Fall also wrote several books about his beetle collections. One of his books is titled "List of the Coleoptera of Southern California, with Notes on Habits and Distribution and Descriptions of New Species", in which Fall writes about the beetle from the salt lake. This book was published by the California Academy of Sciences in 1901. This exhibit simply highlights one of the Tropisternus salsamentus he collected as described on pages 214 and 215 of his 1901 book (Fig. 7).
