Earliest Specimens Collected - Algae, 1864-77

[ Page updated - October 27, 2020 ]

This brief report is about the five earliest known specimens scientifically collected in the study area. It was algae. Henry N. Bolander collected four species of algae between 1864 and 1870. John Gill Lemmon collected one species of algae in 1877. These five specimens are located at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) in Washington, D.C. Presented is a list of the data record copied from the NMNH Specimen Records for each of these five specimens. (Figure 1) is an 1864 photograph of Henry N. Bolander. No photograph found of John Gill Lemmon.

Specimen records may include "media", which are high resolution photographs of the specimen and the attached orginal paper envelope with handwriting on it. The four Bolander specimen records unfortunately do not have media. However, there is media attached to the Lemmon collection specimen record (Figure 2). (Figure 3) is a portion of the Lemmon specimen record detailing the handwriting. Interestingly, the location collected notation on this document reads "Fresh water, California 1877".

The "Precise Location" data record for each of these five specimens read "Redondo Beach". It is unknown at this time how the folks creating the data records determined these specimens were collected at Redondo Beach. The area was not named "Redondo Beach" at the time of the "Date Collected", the place was known as "Salt Works". Perhaps the orginal paper envelopes for the Bolander specimens have handwriting on them which read Salt Works, Los Angeles County. The speculation being one or more of these species of algae could have been collected from the salt lake, adjacent vernal pools or the fresh water well(s) at the salt works site.

Botany specimens were often distributed to various institutions around the world. Added to this report for illustration is (Figure 4) a portion of the media record at The New York Botanical Garden for the Nitella clavata specimen curated there which the record indicates was collected by H. N. Bolander on October 22, 1865 at the water-works of San Francisco.
